Working with the Media Workshops

Join us for a day of workshops, lunch and a chance to get a professional headshot from an onsite photographer.

10 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Session 1

12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.: Lunch

1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.: Session 2


Get your Professional Headshot

Photography sessions will run from 9-11:30 a.m. during lunch hour (12-1:30 p.m.), and 2-4 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis. Sessions will take 2-3 minutes, limited to three poses, and participants will receive a digital copy at a later date. Please indicate in your registration if you would like to have your photo taken.

Session 1 - Building A Public Profile: Scholarship And Social Media

Publishing, Research Gate, Twitter, and Altmetrics with presenters Mark Agius and Dr. Sheri Madigan and Penny Pexman.

10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

  • How the academic landscape has changed in terms of expectations and knowledge mobilization over the past 5-10 years
  • What role the public plays, or should play, if any
  • What your public facing persona represents to you, and to your employer
  • Key things to consider when creating an online profile

Session 2 - Sharing Your Work: Working With The Media

Writing for The Conversation Canada, preparing for and handling media interviews with presenter Dr. Sheri Madigan, Sean Myers and Betty Rice.

1:30- 3:30 p.m.

  • The importance of sharing your research more broadly through the media
  • How sharing your work and working with media can advance careers: academic and non-academic
  • Key points to consider when writing articles for publications like Conversation Canada
  • Media training 101

Presenter Profiles:

Mark Agius is a Project Manager at The Owerko Centre within the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute where his role is focused on strategic planning, community engagement, communications and knowledge translation. Mark also works with the Integrated Concussion Research Program within the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary as a Project Manager where he leads funding proposal development and knowledge translation initiatives. Mark has extensive experience in branding, marketing and public relations having worked as a strategic planner for a number of leading advertising agencies in Toronto, and as a public relations consultant for a public relations firm in San Francisco.

Dr. Sheri Madigan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Determinants of Child Development and is a member of the Owerko Centre at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute. Her work has been widely covered in the media, including The New York Times, Time Magazine, Harper’s Index, CNN, CBC, and Today’s Parent, as well as ABC’s Good Morning America, CTV and Global news. She regularly write news articles for The Conversation Canada, and is the child development expert for CTV Morning Live Calgary, providing monthly segments on topics related to parenting and child development.
